innkeepER FAQS

Happy Anniversary to us!

We opened Brick House on Main Bed & Breakfast on May 12, 2012.

To celebrate, we’ll answer a few BHOM FAQ’s.

How did you become innkeepers?

That’s a really good story, and you can read it here after you finish reading our FAQs: https://www.brickhouseonmain.com/blogs-recipes/2017/3/15/innkeepers-at-last

Where do your guests come from?

At last count we’ve hosted folks from 36 states and 11 foreign countries. Not bad for a small B&B in a small town in rural Ohio.

 Who stays here?

Ages have ranged from tiny infants all the way up to a 93-year-old WWII vet. We’ve hosted couples who’ve been married for more than 60 years and couples who arrived in tux & gown after their wedding reception. We’ve also hosted girls-weekends, friends traveling together and multi-generational family getaways.

 Why do they come?

Our guests come for work, reunions, weddings, local history, local events, family gatherings, funerals, birthdays, anniversaries, sightseeing, outdoor adventures, Amish country, and just to get away for a few days. We’ve been told - more than once - that they come because our food photos are hard to resist!

What is your most often-asked question?

Hands down, the question we hear the most is “How do you pronounce the name of your town?”

Gnadenhutten is pronounced "zhi-NAY-dən-HUT-tən" or "ji-NAY-dun-HUH-tehn”. The German purists among us might have a silent or almost-silent 'G' and call it "NAH-den-HOO-tehn". Still others might say "guh-NAH-den-HOO-tehn" or add an umlaut over the "ü" and say "guh-NAH-den-HYUE-tehn".

Confused? Don't be. Just do what the natives do and call it "ji-NAY-din".

What’s for breakfast?

What do you want? It’s your breakfast, so we always ask if you have a preference. We offer a wide variety of homemade options for breakfast, from indulgent homemade baked goods to healthier oats, fruit, yogurt & house-made granola. Our eggs come from happy free-range hens on local farms. We source as many local products as possible.

Your food photos are so tempting. Can I ask for a breakfast I’ve seen on your website?

Of course. If one of our photos is tempting your taste buds, just let us know before you arrive. We’ll do our best to tickle those taste buds with something they’ll love, and we’ll make sure it’s camera-ready for you to take your own food photos to share with your friends.

Do you live at Brick House on Main?

Yes, your innkeepers live in a private section of the house, separate from our guest area.

How long have you & Jim been together?

We met in early 1975. We’ve been happily married since August 24, 1979.

Best review?

I must admit a bit of bias here. My favorite review was written several years ago by a young man named “Ben” who happened to be dating our daughter, Bethany. Ben began with the title “Pillows as soft as angels’ tushes”, and continued the hyperbole throughout the review. Sure, it was over-the-top but, hey, he wanted to marry our daughter. His Room Tip - "There are only two rooms, and choosing between them is like choosing between a million dollars and a million dollars. Take the million." (BTW - Bethany & Ben have been happily married since 2015.)

Best part of being innkeepers?

The best part of being innkeepers is the friendships forged with the amazing folks who stay here. This is the best job in the world, and we’re blessed by every guest. Most of all, we’re honored when a guest returns, gives us a big hug, and says, “I’m so glad to be home again!”

Thanks, everyone, for an amazing journey!

Your innkeepers, Jim & Cathy Marker
